DeRonto is Back

Demar Derozan returns today to his old home. Tonight he returns to Scotiabank Arena where he will face his former team the Toronto Raptors. Derozan was traded from the Raptors to the San Antonio Spurs this past offseason. The complete trade was that the Spurs traded small forward Kawhi Leonard and shooting guard Danny Green to the Raptors for shooting guard Demar Derozan, center Jakob Poeltl and a 2019 first-round pick for the NBA draft.

Derozan already played the Raptors earlier this year. In that game Derozan recorded his first career triple double and the Spurs blew out the Raptors 125-107. Derozan’s triple-double included twenty one points, eleven assist, and fourteen rebounds along with a monster tomahawk slam dunk where he stared down the entire Raptors bench. Derozan had the game of his life and was playing with anger and with a vengeance.

Derozan was very publicly upset about the trade to the Spurs. He was upset that days before the trade Raptors Director of Player Operations Masai Ujiri had told Derozan that he was staying in Toronto and that he was not going to be traded. And of course a few days later Derozan gets traded. There have been rumors that Derozan was so upset with the trade that he was crying. But what we do know for a fact was that minutes before the trade was announced Derozan posted on his story with an image saying “there’s no loyalty in this game.” Derozan was very clearly upset about being told one thing and have another thing happen.

All-Star Weekend for Aldridge

This past weekend San Antonio Spurs power forward LaMarcus Aldridge made his seventh All-Star appearance. The NBA All-Star game this season was in Charlotte, North Carolina. The team formats this year were not like they have been in the years previous where it was East vs West but instead it was Team Lebron James vs Team Giannis Antetokounmpo. Where both team captains did a nationally televised draft and picked their own teams in form of a snake draft.

There was some undiscovered drama on Team Lebron that nobody was talking about. The media did not even discuss it one bit. It felt like it was only drama that only Spurs fans noticed. That drama was that Lebron managed to create was putting both Kawhi Leonard and LaMarcus Aldridge on the same team. Most may know what happened this past off-season where Leonard requested a trade from the Spurs due to the fact that he did not trust the medical staff and another reason that was leaked was because he did not like to play with Aldridge. The off-season before Aldridge reportedly requested a trade because he did not like playing with Leonard but the Spurs were able to change his mind. Ultimately Leonard did get his wish but it was definitely easy to tell that there was tension in the room. Aldridge ended the game with game with two points and four rebounds while Leonard ended with nineteen points and four rebounds and five assist. Leonard was an All-Star team starter as well while Aldridge came off the bench.

The former teammates had to be separated but not in a violent way. For example during their press conference they both were on the other side of the room and during the team photo they both looked like two grounded siblings together. They did not play on the same on the court together as well. Also, when shoot around pictures were taken and they were near each other they gave each other the death stare, which was funny.

Pop How Many Do We Have?

To many San Antonio Spurs fans the best Spurs memes are one out of the next three memes. One is Tim Duncan dancing on the bench, two is Manu Ginobili dunking on Chris Bosh during the 2014 NBA Finals which to most Spurs fans was the sweetest form of revenge after what had happened in the previous season. But the top voted meme was one of Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich counting to five with his fingers. It appeared as if he was doing it to a fan. He was referring to how many NBA titles the Spurs have won.

The infamous meme was created during the Spurs championship parade after defeating the Miami Heat in five games. Popovich is not know for doing stuff like this which makes it a rarity. To some it reminded them of Los Angeles Laker kobe Bryant doing the same thing at a Lakers game to a fan only difference here was that Kobe was on the bench.

Popovich first won his championship back in the 1998-1999 season after defeating the New York Knicks in five games. Soon after he lead the Spurs to winning their second title after defeating the New Jersey Nets in a total of six games. Two years later he created a dynasty after defeating the Detroit Pistons in a unforgettable seven game series. This was Popovich’s ultimate test because the man coaching the Detroit Pistons was Larry Brown. Popovich was an assistant for Brown for about a decade and was one of his most trusted assistant coaches. The fact that Popovich beat Brown was the ultimate student beats master moment, but of course Popovich was very respectful about it, he did not even celebrate after winning it. Another two years went by and in 2007 he won his fourth NBA title by sweeping the Cleveland Cavaliers. Popovich then went on a championship drought for six year. He made the NBA Finals in 2013 but unfortunately lost in seven games to the Miami Heat. Some would say that he should have won it that year and it could be true because some of the luckiest plays in NBA history happened to the Miami Heat in that series. Then in 2014 the Spurs faced the Heat where they got redemption and beat the Heat in five games to complete Popovich’s fifth NBA title.

Spurs Fall to Warriors

On Wednesday night the San Antonio Spurs lost to the Golden State Warriors by a score 141- 102. They got absolutely blown out of the gym it was the worst loss in San Antonio Spurs history and also in head coach Gregg Popovich’s era.
The Spurs played absolutely horrific after the first quarter. The Warriors shot them out the gym. The warriors managed to score forty nine points in the third quarter by that time it was a blowout and there was no point in even trying to make a comeback. As the Spurs were about to play a back to back and had to fly out to Portland to play the Portland Trail Blazers the next day. Patty Mills finished the night as the Spurs top scorer with sixteen points.

The Spurs had recently been on a five game win streak and where in quite a good rhythm. On Monday night there winning streak got snapped on the road against the Sacramento Kings. The Spurs lost that game by a final score of 127-112 as the Spurs had a horrific team performance that night. It seemed as if the only ones who showed up to play were the two stars in those being Spurs power forward Lamarcus Aldridge and shooting guard Demar Derozan.
The Warriors game was the second game of the Spurs famous rodeo road trip. The rodeo road trip is eight straight road games that will span this season from February fourth which started in Sacramento, California and will last until the twenty fifth of February and will end in Brooklyn, New York.
