Demar Derozan returns today to his old home. Tonight he returns to Scotiabank Arena where he will face his former team the Toronto Raptors. Derozan was traded from the Raptors to the San Antonio Spurs this past offseason. The complete trade was that the Spurs traded small forward Kawhi Leonard and shooting guard Danny Green to the Raptors for shooting guard Demar Derozan, center Jakob Poeltl and a 2019 first-round pick for the NBA draft.
Derozan already played the Raptors earlier this year. In that game Derozan recorded his first career triple double and the Spurs blew out the Raptors 125-107. Derozan’s triple-double included twenty one points, eleven assist, and fourteen rebounds along with a monster tomahawk slam dunk where he stared down the entire Raptors bench. Derozan had the game of his life and was playing with anger and with a vengeance.
Derozan was very publicly upset about the trade to the Spurs. He was upset that days before the trade Raptors Director of Player Operations Masai Ujiri had told Derozan that he was staying in Toronto and that he was not going to be traded. And of course a few days later Derozan gets traded. There have been rumors that Derozan was so upset with the trade that he was crying. But what we do know for a fact was that minutes before the trade was announced Derozan posted on his story with an image saying “there’s no loyalty in this game.” Derozan was very clearly upset about being told one thing and have another thing happen.
